The Crazed Killer, the Cunning Lover and the Crazy Witness

It is 1946 and World War Two has ended. Soldiers are returning home to their wives and girlfriends and the Baby-Boom generation is already gleaming in their eyes. Janet Stewart is checking into a large San Francisco hotel to wait for the arrival of her soldier husband, who should be arriving soon from overseas. Janet, played by Anabel Shaw, is anxiously awaiting her husband’s arrival, and after a nap and a dream about meeting her husband she walks slowly to the hotel room balcony to enjoy the fresh air.

As Janet peers out at the San Francisco skyline she hears a commotion, and she sees a man and a woman arguing in a nearby window. This leads to that and the man angrily picks up a heavy silver candlestick and hits his wife several times, killing her. Janet screams, and we suddenly segue to another scene.

Janet’s husband, Lieutenant Paul Stewart, has arrived and will soon be reunited with his wife. Unfortunately, when he opens the hotel room door to her room, he discovers her staring blankly into space, unable to speak or respond. The hotel doctor tells Paul that his wife is in shock, and fortunately there is a doctor living in the hotel who specializes in disease of the mind.

Vincent Price is Doctor Richard Cross, the doctor who will care for Janet. . . . The doctor who has a private insane asylum in the country outside San Francisco. . . . The doctor who just killed his wife with a silver candlestick. There will be one more murder courtesy of the doctor, yes, one more murder. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
