Hiding in Havana
Wilbur and Orville Wright, bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, were the first Americans to fly an airplane in 1903. One of Orville’s friends had a baby boy in 1910 and Orville Wright was that boy’s Godfather. Growing up the little boy was around the airplane industry and was taught to be an airplane pilot by his Godfather Orville Wright. When the government began licensing pilots and flight instructors, Orville’s Godson was awarded Flight Instructor Certificate Number One. This fellow later served courageously as an Air Force Pilot during World War Two.
In this noir adventure he is a Navy man, and World War Two has just ended. Bob Cummings, born with the name Charles Clarence Robert Orville Cummings, is Chuck Scott, a man down on his luck. He doesn’t even have enough money for a cup of coffee, until he discovers a man’s wallet on the ground at his feet. After spending a dollar and a quarter for a good breakfast, he returns the wallet to its owner, who happens to be Miami crime boss Eddie Roman, played by Steve Cochran.
The mob boss likes the young man and gives him a job as his chauffeur in his specially built car. This baby has a feature that will knock your socks off, as you will soon discover. But I digress. The gangster also has a beautiful blonde wife who is just aching to get away from her crime-boss husband, and our young chauffeur is just the fellow to take her away.
Of course, the mob boss is not one to let chauffeur Chuck Scott take his prized blonde trophy-wife from him and get away Scott-free. The chase is on in this noir thriller with a dialogue style that we will see again many years later in the hit television show, “Miami Vice.” Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
