Kirk Douglas’ Secretary and Leo Durocher’s Wife

Laraine Day, the leading secretary in this madcap comedy, was born La Raine Johnson in 1920. While filming this movie she was the wife of baseball legend Leo Durocher. She was so passionate for baseball that while Durocher was managing the New York Giants she hosted a pre-baseball game television show called ‘Day with the Giants,’ and even wrote a book with the same title. She was commonly called the ‘First Lady of Baseball’ during those years.

In this story she is a college student trying to become an author and write the Great American Novel. Kirk Douglas has just written a best-selling novel and he is the guest lecturer at her class. Keenan Wynn is Ronnie, the side-kick of the famous author. Both Kirk Douglas and Keenan Wynn are smitten with Laraine Day’s beauty and she is asked to become the famous author’s personal secretary, helping him write his next novel.

The beautiful blonde jumps at the chance to work with the great author, but when she shows up for work the next morning she discovers that the author is much more interested in having fun with his secretaries than getting any work done. His previous secretary is just leaving, and our young wanna-be author discovers that his previous secretary did much more for the author than typing and dictation.

This leads to that as they develop their rocky relationship, and one crazy night they get married. She has learned to handle his roving eye for beautiful women and he is discovering that he can’t do without his secretary-wife.

Unfortunately, the famous author’s next book is rejected by his publisher and the author is convinced that he has lost his touch and his career is over. Because of some comic misunderstandings, he also believes that his wife has fallen in love with her old boss, played by Rudy Vallee. The newlyweds argue and finally split up, with divorce papers soon to follow. It looks like this madcap relationship and marriage is off for good. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
