It's A Baby! . . . Whose Baby Is It?

The winter of 1950-1951 was brutal in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where my father was the minister of a small congregation. The next September I came along, their seventh child. The baby born in this story comes along in November of that same year. A year earlier Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor starred in the blockbuster movie “Father of the Bride,” a comedy about the trials and tribulations of a middle class man who will have many mishaps when his daughter decides to get married. That movie was properly renewed with the copyright office in the 28th year after release so it will not become public domain until the year 2045. This 1951 sequel is one of the very few MGM movies that slipped through the cracks, and became public domain in the 29th year after release, when a renewal of the copyright was not filed. Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor are once again the focus as daughter Kay tells both sets of parents that she and her husband are having a baby. Her father had been making plans to see the world now that his daughter’s wedding is finally paid for . . . It is time for him and his wife Ellie to spend some of their money and time together in Hawaii or some other vacation paradise. When he learns that his daughter is going to have a baby, he is first terrified that as a ‘grandfather’ his life is slipping away and he is now ‘old.’ Then a second thought hits him . . . . His daughter is having the baby, but it will probably cost him plenty. Then the third shoe drops . . . . Third shoe? . . . . Wrong metaphor . . . . Except for cousin Eustice . . . . In any case the bickering begins between the two sets of soon-to-be grandparents, and it is nearly all-out war. Who will control the new baby and decide what to name it, how to decorate the room, where the new parents will live, and on and on. . . . It becomes a battle of the Grandparents, while the hapless mother and father of the new baby sit stunned that they will not be able to make any decisions about their own child! But Spencer Tracy, as the wise father, manages to smooth things over and keep all of the family at peace . . . . Until the cops get involved. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
